Glutathione is usually called GSH which is an important active pharmaceutical ingredient. This compound is also a kind of non-protein sulfhydryl tripeptide compounds which is an active short peptide. It can be obtained by glutamic acid, cysteine and glycine through peptide bond condensation. As a chemical, Glutathione has some its own properties. It could be soluble in water, dilute alcohol, liquid ammonia and dimethyl formamide. However, it is insoluble in ethanol, ether and acetone. When it exists as a solid, it is relative stable. When it exists as an aqueous solution, it can easily be oxidized in the air.
Glutathione is the prosthetic group of GAPDH, and it participates with tricarboxylic acid cycle and glycometabolism to help human body get high energy. It could activate the mercapto group ( -- SH) enzymes in order to protect the body away from heavy metal and epoxy compound. Besides, it could also prompt metabolism of carbohydrate, fat and protein and control the metabolism process of cells at the same time. In addition, it has the function of radioactive protection and melanosis restraining.
